NEW MEMBERS WELCOME
Please read the information and conditions below.

Information and conditions

1. The class is continuous and new members are accepted at most times. A beginners' course will be run at certain times of the year. Each term is to be paid for in advance. These periods will vary in length to take into account both hall booking periods and both public and other holidays. Charges will be set to reflect these variations. Any refunds will be at the coach's discretion and depend on the reason for the request. (Hall hire has to be paid even if no-one turns up)
2. British Fencing membership is compulsory, for all fencing, as it provides insurance cover, including public liability cover.
3. All the specialist equipment will be provided for an initial period. Because of new governing body regulations it will now be necessary for a pair of fencing breeches to be purchased shortly after completing the initial period of learning, as it is not possible to provide these. Parents will not be asked to buy any other equipment in the short term. When parents wish to purchase, advice will be given and it can be done through the coach at preferential prices. 4. The course will follow the BFA Achievement Award Scheme. Shortly before the end of the first stage of the course the children should have passed their Grade 1. As the class progresses, so other Grades will be reached. Note that after the first couple of Grades the time taken to attain the required standard is much longer. On passing the Grade, a certificate with a sew-on badge is available. The price for these is currently £4.50. There is no obligation or pressure to purchase these.
5. Each session will begin with warm ups and stretching to reduce the potential for injury. Fencing is, to many people's surprise, a very energetic activity. The children should not wear too many layers of clothing (perhaps for fear of being hurt). A T-shirt or similar round collar top is quite sufficient. An extra layer for afterwards together with a towel and perhaps a small plastic bottle of water or squash might be worthwhile extras (fizzy drinks are not recommended).

6. Fencing has one of the best safety records in sport. It is, however, potentially dangerous. Therefore, it must be made clear from the outset that certain rules MUST be observed for everyone's safety and enjoyment.
a. Children must obey all instructions from the coach and observe the safety guidelines they will be taught.
b. Failure to behave in a suitable manner will result in a child being excluded from the rest of the session. Repeated misbehaviour will result in permanent expulsion from the class, in which case no refund of fees will be made.
Parents will be informed if the child is excluded for the remainder of a session (assuming that the parent is not present) and will be warned of any possibility of permanent exclusion.
c. As in all sporting activities, the wearing of jewellery, especially piercings, is advised against and it should be removed. Piercings which cannot be removed should be covered by plaster.
7. Parents will not be required to stay for the whole session but will be welcome to do so. Any assistance with the running of the session (e.g. help with equipment distribution/collection) will be gratefully received. However, any interference in the running of the class will result in the parent being requested not to attend the class.
8. Where parents do not stay, they must arrange for the child to be collected promptly at the end of the session and state the name of the person who is to do so on the form. Any changes to these arrangements, temporary or otherwise must be notified by the beginning of the session(s). The emergency contact number MUST be one which is available during and shortly after the session (in case the child is not collected).
9. Note that enrolment and administrative procedures may delay the actual activity period of the first session of a term, although this will be kept to a minimum.
10. Coach's credentials including qualifications and CRB clearance may be seen on request.
